Losing a loved one to suicide is a traumatic and devastating event, but please know that you are not alone. Over 34,000 people die by suicide each year, and it is their family and friends who are left behind to pick up the broken pieces. This makes you a survivor, a survivor of an uprooting misfortune. You may be experiencing feelings of shock, disorientation, depression, anger, guilt, relief, loss of appetite, lack of sleep, and a lack of energy. These are all common emotions and symptoms, and although they may be intense at the moment, they will begin to diminish as more time passes. The amount of time that has to pass before they decrease depends on how you cope and heal through this debilitating event.

Seeking Help

If you are a survivor of suicide, please don't go through this loss and process of healing alone. There are many other survivors out there that are more than willing to be an outlet of encouragement, advice, and support. Find a support group that you enjoy and fit well in to provide you with some help. Often times the loss of a loved one, especially to suicide, is overwhelming and too hard to bear alone.

Next, you may want to seek professional help if the pain has become unmanageable. Look for a licensed professional counselor (LPC), such as ourselves, to help you learn how to cope with this great loss. It is through the therapeutic alliance of client and clinician that a working process of coping and healing arises.
